Springfield's Best Fried Chicken

Springfield's Best Fried Chicken

I walked into Mama G’s and a woman yelled my name like she’d been waiting for me, so right away Springfield’s fried chicken scene felt personal. From the catfish-crust bird at Mama G’s Downtown to the chicken at a brewery where I signed up for a birthday reward and pretended my birthday was next week, this town covers the whole gospel of grease.

I ate tenders with ranch that I’ve scientifically studied. I ate fried chicken with eggs and called it breakfast.

That is range. Here’s the list, go get your nap on.

Greeted like family
Big portions, fair price
Catfish crust crisps up
Catfish seasoning packs punch
Enough leftovers for later

I walked into Mama G's Kitchen Downtown and a woman yelled my name like she'd been waiting for me. That's the greeting. The catfish crust crisps up like a sunburn, and the seasoning packs a punch right in the sinuses. Portions are big, prices are fair, and I left with a box of leftovers big enough to stage a small war. I ate them cold at midnight and felt no shame. This place treats you like family, which in my family means someone always asks why you're not eating more. Good chicken, good vibes, good math.

Cheesy bread and maple dip
Great for large groups
Service friendly and attentive

Civil Kitchen is the kind of place where you can spread out and relax, which I did, physically and emotionally. The chicken comes with a savory-sweet sauce that has a kick like a mule with a grudge. The cheesy bread and maple dip is a combo I will defend to my grave. Big portions, relaxed vibe, and the service is friendly and attentive, so you never have to wave your arms like a shipwreck victim. It works for large groups, too, because everyone can shout over each other and still feel heard. I had leftovers and I loved them. Crows outside my car loved them more.

Fish and chips staple
Chips with dip essential
Daily specials never disappoint
Sam makes guests feel welcome

Farmers Gastropub has a fish and chips staple that I respect, but the real reason I show up is the chips with dip. Essential. Like oxygen, but greasier. Sam makes guests feel welcome, and I felt so welcome I almost ordered a second lunch. Daily specials never disappoint, and I've never seen the same one twice, which keeps my brain spinning like a rotisserie. The chicken here isn't the main event, but it shows up anyway, like a good friend at a party who doesn't bring anything but still helps you move a couch. Solid. Comfortable. I'll be back.

Best egg rolls in town
Curries beat drive-thru expectations
Fast food that feels healthy
Great service, sticky floors
Quality slips, loyal customers return

Thai Express has the best egg rolls in town, and I will fight anyone who says otherwise, but not physically because I'm out of shape. The curries beat drive-thru expectations, and that's a low bar, but they clear it with style. It's fast food that somehow feels healthy, like a salad that lied to your mouth. The service is great, and the floors are sticky in a way that makes me think of ancient soda spills. Quality slips sometimes, and loyal customers return anyway. That's love, or Stockholm syndrome. I ordered the fried chicken curry, and it absorbed the sauce like a gentle sponge. Good.

Highlights
Nachos loaded with toppings
Grilled chicken club solid
Fries pretty good
Service above average
Prices not bad

The Roost on Sunshine is consistent, which is the highest compliment I can give a bar and grill. The nachos are loaded with toppings, so many that I had to eat them with a fork and a plan. The grilled chicken club is solid, not spectacular, but it does its job like a reliable coworker who never calls in sick. Fries are pretty good, and yes, there's a difference. Service is above average, prices are not bad, and I left not angry. That might sound faint, but in the world of fried chicken, not being angry is a win. I'd go back. I will go back. I already texted my friends.

Frito pie with fries
Chili needs more flavor
Server Alex keeps drinks full
Affordable food, great service
Maria great with kids

Casper's Diner is a place where the food is cheap and the service is great. Server Alex kept my drink full so many times I thought the glass was a bottomless pit. The Frito pie with fries is a carb bomb that I detonated without hesitation. The chili needs more flavor, like a sad song that needs a beat. Server Maria was great with kids, and I saw her hypnotize a toddler with a crayon. The fried chicken here isn't fancy, but it's honest, and it's affordable, and sometimes that's all you need. I ate, I paid, I waddled. The floor had a squeak, but so do I. We match.

Friendly, attentive patio service
Dogs welcome on quiet patio
Generous Philly cheesesteak portions
Outstanding fried pickles and sauce
Great fish and chips, too

The Roost on Cox Rd has a patio that's quiet, and my dog sat under the table like a furry napkin. The service is friendly and attentive, and they brought water for the dog before me. I'm not mad. The Philly cheesestake is generous, so generous that I had to unbutton my pants. The fried pickles and sauce are outstanding, and I ate them like a starved heron. The fish and chips are great too, and the fried chicken? It's not on the menu as a star, but the tenders I got were juicy. Dogs welcome, humans tolerated. I'll return with a leash and an appetite.

Perfectly breaded, delicious chicken tenders
Best local Ranch dressing
Attentive, friendly table service
Great birthday reward for members
Meatloaf combo never disappoints

Bricktown Brewery serves chicken tenders that are perfectly breaded, like a golden armor that snaps when you bite. The best local Ranch dressing is here, and I say local because I've done a scientific study of Ranch dilers. The service is attentive and friendly, and our table never felt ignored, which is rare in a brewery where people stare at their own pints. The meatloaf combo never disappoints, and the birthday reward for members is great, so I signed up and pretended my birthday was next week. The fried chicken is the star, but the ranch is the supporting actor that steals the show. I left full, happy, and slightly lactose intolerant. Worth it.

Sandwich and grilled cheese magic
Parmesan chicken packed with flavor
Attentive to dairy allergies
One-man show, zero slips
Free garage parking nearby

Druff's is a one-man show, and he performs like a circcus acrobat with a spatula. The sandwch and griled cheese magic, and by magic I mean he somehow makes a sandwich taste like a warm hug. The parmesan chicken is packed with flavor, and he paid attention to my dairy allergy without rolling his eyes, which is more than I can say for my own family. Zero slips, and I watched him handle a lunch rush like he was conducting a symphonny. Free gararge parking nearby, so I didn't have to feed a meter. The fried chicken here is not the main attraction, but he does it right. I'd trust him with a secret. I'd trust him with a full meal.

Real deal Italian food
Huge kids meal portions
Excellent Chicken Marsala
Exceptional all-around experience

Nonna's is the real deal Italian, and I say that as someone who once ate pizza from a gas station and felt betrayed. The chicken Marsala is excellent, rich and saucy, and the kids' meal portions are huge, so I ordered one and felt like a giant child. The all-around experience is exceptional, from the wait to the last bite. The fried chicken? It's not their signature, but the chicken Marsala is fried-adjacent, so I'm counting it. I left with a full stomach and a desire to name my first-born after a pasta. They don't have deap-fried whole birds, but they have soul. That's enough.

Menu's got real range

Gailey's Breakfast Cafe fills fast, so go early or eat your arm. The staff treats you right, and the portions are generous, like they're trying to fatten you for a long winter. Prices won't hurt, and the menu's got real range, so you can get fried chicken at breakfast and call it a piec. I did. The chicken was crispy, juicy, and it came with eggs, which felt wrong and right at the same time. The coffee was hot, the syrup was sticky, and I left with a nap stain on my shirt. I wore it like a badge. This place is a morning ritual, and I'm a convert.

Real sit-down meal
Homemade biscuits and gravy
Huge pancakes for cheap
Friendly local atmosphere

Rosie Jo's Cafe is a real sit-down meal, and I sat, and I ate, and I sat some more. The homemade biscuits and gravey are so good I wanted to take a bath in them, but I didn't because that's weird. The huge pancackes are cheap, and the local atmosphere is friendly, so I felt like I belonged even though I don't know anyone. The fried chicken here? It's not their poster child, but I ordered it anyway and got a crispy, salty piece that made me nod slow. It's the kind of place where the waitress knows your order by the third visit. I'm on visit one, but I'm training her. Good food, good people, good naps after.
